Signature Events
The Portland Classical Chinese Garden hosts several signature events throughout the year. These events enrich the Garden’s mission of engaging and educating visitors in the richly authentic culture of China and allow visitors to see the Garden in new ways.
Chinese New Year
The Garden celebrates Chinese Lunar New Year with an annual festival for families and children. Red paper couplets expressing good fortune are hung, lions dance in the plaza, children are read traditional Chinese folktales, young and old enjoy the paper-cutting, calligraphy and knot tying activities. At the end of the celebration, children work to make lanterns so that they may join in a lantern parade and help celebrate the traditional lantern festival. During Chinese New Year, the Garden also hosts its largest annual plant sale. Featuring unique and rare specimens, the plant sale allows visitors to bring a small part of the Garden home.
Tuesdays by Twilight
The Garden celebrates the summer season by presenting six weeks of musical entertainment in Portland’s most beautiful concert space. Inspired by the lingering light and magic of the Garden at dusk, Tuesday’s by Twilight takes listeners on a journey of musical genres from jazz to traditional Chinese music to salsa.
Mooncakes & Pomegranates
The Garden celebrates its anniversary each year with Mooncakes & Pomegranates. A community wide celebration, Mooncakes & Pomegranates coincides with the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional celebration of the abundance of the harvest. The Mid-Autumn Festival is an occasion for friends and family to gather, eat “mooncakes” and view the moon, the symbol of harmony and unity.
